About Us

Football InjuryWhat is St. Croix Regional Sports Medicine?

We specialize in the prevention and treatment of injuries resulting from training for and participation in athletic events.

The sports medicine team consists of physicians (sports medicine specialist/orthopedics), athletic trainers, and physical therapists. Other related services offered within our department are massage therapy, occupational therapy, industrial medicine, and exercise classes.

Why choose a sports medicine specialist?

A sports medicine physician has specialized training in sports or exercise-related injuries for all ages. Their primary focus of study is on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries that occur during sports and other physical activity. A sports medicine physician gains advanced skills during a fellowship program in sports medicine after finishing a residency program in another specialty.

Athletic Training

St. Croix Regional Sports Medicine has Athletic Training contracts with the following schools:

We provide an Athletic Trainer at the above schools for athletic practices and event coverage. An Athletic Trainer is on-site Monday through Friday preventing and treating injuries during the school year.

They also cover home sporting events, prioritizing event coverage by contact versus non-contact sports deemed highest risk by the NCAA catastrophic injury response rate.

An Athletic Trainer is a licensed health care professional helping to optimize activity and participation for student athletes. Athletic training encompasses:

  • Injury/illness prevention and wellness protection
  • Clinical evaluation and diagnosis
  • Immediate and emergency care
  • Treatment and rehabilitation
  • Organizational and professional health and well-being

All Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) must graduate from an accredited university that is recognized by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. Our Athletic Trainers work under the direction of our team physician, Dr. Patrick McDonough. Dr. McDonough is a sports medicine specialty physician. Our team approach to care is what makes our program so successful.
